WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

In simple terms, root canal treatment is the removal of the infected soft tissue within the tooth and its replacement by an artificial inert 'filling' material. This procedure basically saves the tooth and eliminates dental pain.

Earlier, Root Canal Treatment used to be very cumbersome, and patients used to dread getting it done, added to it the number of visits! Things have changed a lot these days.

A patient requiring a Root Canal Treatment generally will experience pain in a tooth while biting or lying down or at times may notice pus draining from a boil on the gum next to the teeth. Many times RCT is required for teeth fractured due to trauma or biting something hard. Intentional RCT is often done on teeth involved in prosthetic rehabilitation or severe attrition. The clinic has also successfully treated avulsed (out of socket due to trauma) teeth with endodontic therapy and replantation/ splinting.

WHY AND WHEN ARE ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS REQUIRED?

Decay of the teeth (cavities) if left untreated, generally progress and gradually destroy a significant portion of the tooth before reaching the 'pulp' of the tooth. The pulp of the tooth is a thin soft tissue present in the tooth canals consisting of mainly nerves and blood vessels.

Once this infection reaches the pulp it gives rise to a common 'dental pain'. At this stage the tooth can only be saved by performing a root canal treatment.
